BEACTIVATED IS NEUROMUSCULAR ACTIVATION TECHNIQUES, DEVELOPED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN PHYSIOTHERAPIST DOUGLAS HEEL.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE TECHNIQUE IS BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE THAT REPEATED PHYSICAL OR MENTAL STRESS LOAD CAN CHANGE THE BODY'S PRIMARY AND IDEAL WORKING PATTERNS.

Fundamentally, it is often seen that primary muscles responsible for breathing and moving your body choose to "unplug from the socket" during times of stress or injury. The body is good at compensating and quickly finds alternative solutions, allowing you to keep moving and breathing. However, these patterns can cause reduced strength, stiffness, pain conditions, overuse injuries, or headaches, to name a few.

The purpose of the technique is to map out these compensation patterns and, based on that, reactivate the inactive muscles so you can once again become as resilient and strong as possible.

These simple treatment techniques take just a few minutes to perform. They can therefore be done as home exercises, allowing you or your clients to continue the treatment independently.

BeActivated is an approach that is beneficial in injury treatment and rehabilitation. It can be used to enhance performance in sports, as well as in stress treatment as a “therapeutic window” to break patterns associated with chronic pain, physiological or mental stress, and lack of energy.

Course content

You will be guided through the fundamental muscle activation techniques for the body's 3 zones in a sequence that forms the framework for BeActivated. There will be plenty of time to try out the techniques on each other, as well as for any questions that arise along the way.

We will delve deeper into the philosophy behind BeActivated, incorporating the body's response to stress and the connection between body and mind. Everyone has a story, so during the course, we will cover many fundamental aspects that play a role in the activation process.

You will learn to test based on an understanding of the body's zones in the 1-2-3 test. This test is central to uncovering your clients' compensatory patterns, and not least, to helping your client navigate, understand, and manage their symptoms in a broader context. In addition to this, you will see that the techniques can and should not only be used in the clinic, but are something clients can do themselves, which provides flexibility and depth to the work.

During the course, we will discuss how BeActivated can be applied more broadly and in more functional contexts. We will also reflect on the challenges you might experience in your work with your clients, so you can become even better and sharper, not just in your techniques, but also in your approach to this work.

There will be space to introduce more activation techniques that build upon the sequence to dive even deeper into clients' compensations and default patterns, sometimes including the application of this work around the visual field.

Who is this course for

The courses are mainly manual, but are open to anyone who has an interest in the body and movement, as well as a curiosity to look at the body and the human being in a larger context —both in terms of finding and treating potential root causes.
Healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists, osteopaths, medical doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, instructors, etc., have all benefited from the courses, but a healthcare background is not a requirement.
